Guide for auto and manual loading,selection and syncing of subtitle and audio tracks in MPC-BE player.
System Config:
- Software : MPC BE 1.5.5 x64
- Operating System : Windows 10 Pro x64
Media File : Media file is a multimedia container file which can contain a single or multiple streams embedded in it. It mainly contains could be Video and/or audio streams. In addition it could contain subtitle a stream. Example :
Video Stream : It holds only video data. A media file container can hold single or multiple video streams.
Audio stream : It hold only audio data. A media file container can hold single or multiple streams streams.
Text Stream : It hold only text based data such as subtitle
Subtitle : A Subtitle is the transcript of the video and audio content of the media file.
Subtitle File can be categorized into two types :
1 Text based subtitle : Subtitle in the texts form. Example : SubRip ( .srt), SAMI(.smi), SubStation Alpha (.ssa), Advanced SubStation Subtitle
2. Image Based Subtitle : Subtitle in the form of images. Example : VobSub(.sub/.idx), BluRay sup (.sup),
Subtitle can also be categorized as :
Embedded Subtitles : Subtitles that are embedded in the media file.
External Subtitles : Subtitles which exists as a separate subtitle file.
MPC-BE Subtitle Settings
When internal subtitle renderer is selected from the drop down list labelled Subtitles > Subtitle renderer, MPC-BE inbuilt subtitle related feature can be used.
Automatic Loading of Subtitle Files by MPC-BE
When a video file is played with MPC-BE, it searches for subtitle files embedded in the video file. If embedded subtitles are found then they are loaded into MPC-BE subtitle track list.
MPC-BE subtitle track list is located at Play > Subtitles menu between separation bars.
MPC-BE also search for external subtitle file in the folders which has been specified in Subtitles > Auto paths. If external subtitle are found then they are loaded in MPC-BE subtitle track list. MPC-BE will load the external subtitle file only if the its filename follows the Subtitle naming convention.
Subtitle File naming convention
External Subtitle filename must match the filename of the video file. In addition subtitle filename can have language code which is used by MPC-BE to identify the language of the subtitle track. Subtitle file name can also have subtitle tags/attributes.
Language Code : The language code for external subtitle file which is recognizable by MPC-BE is of three types:
- ISO 639-2 Code
- ISO 639-1 Code
- Name of Language ( in English) - This does not work all the time.

Manually load External subtitle files
User have option to manually load a external subtitle file in MPC-BE player.
List of subtitle formats supported by MPC-BE for loading.
To load a external subtitle file, do the following:
- Select Play > Subtitles > Load Ext Subtitle. (Shortcut keys : Ctrl + L)
- Select the external subtitle file using Windows OS file Explorer.
- Select Open button.
- The selected external subtitle file will be loaded in MPC-BE and it will be selected for playback.
Automatic Selection of subtitle track for display in MPC-BE
When there are multiple subtitles for a media file, MPC-BE needs to select one of them which will be displayed on the video screen. MPC-BE supports displaying only one subtitle track during the video playback.
Automatic selection of a subtitle track depends on:
- Settings done for Prefer external subtitles over embedded subtitles and Ignore Embedded Subtitle.
- Settings done in Playback > Default track Preference > Subtitles.
- Subtitles tracks which has been attributed as Forced and/or Default is given preference in selection.
- First Subtitle in the list of loaded Subtitles arranged in alphanumeric. ascending order
1. Prefer external subtitles over embedded subtitles and Ignore Embedded Subtitle
Prefer external subtitles over embedded subtitles :
- Checked : MPC-BE will prefer selecting a subtitle from the list of external subtitle over embedded subtitle.
- Unchecked : MPC-BE will prefer selecting a subtitle from the list of embedded subtitle.
Ignore Embedded Subtitle :
- Checked : MPC-BE will not load subtitles embedded in the video file.
- Unchecked : MPC-BE will load subtitles embedded in the video file.
2. Subtitle Default Track Preference Settings
Subtitles: The MPC-BE inbuilt Default track preference setting allows the user to set a list of preferred languages which will be preferred by MPC-BE for the selection of a subtitle track in specified language from the list of multiple subtitle tracks which has been loaded in MPC-BE .The language which has been entered first in the list will be given highest preference followed by other languages in the list.
For MPC-BE track selection based on language will work only if the subtitle track has proper Language attribute.
You need to enter the three letter language codes (ISO 639-2) separated by comma or space.

3 letter language codes for some languages:
- English : eng
- Arabic : ara
- Chinese : chi
- Finnish : fin
- French : fre
- German : ger
- Korean : kor
- Russian : rus

To set the Default track preference for Subtitles track selection, do the followings:
- Select Playback tab.
- Enter a single or multiple language codes in the textbox labelled Subtitles in the groupbox labelled Default track preference.
- Select Apply button.
Example : If eng ger ara tha has been entered then MPC-BE will give highest preference to the subtitle in English language, followed by German, Arabic and Thai subtitles.
External subtitle file must be properly attributed/tagged with Language by adding the Language code in the Subtitle filename separated by dot(.). This is required for default track preference setting work properly.
It is recommended to use following language code for external subtitle file :
- ISO 639-2 Code
- ISO 639-1 Code
Example :
To tag the external subtitle file with English language the subtitle filename must contain eng(ISO 639-2 Code) or en(ISO 639-1 Code).
- The movie.eng.mp4
- The movie.en.mp4
To tag the external subtitle file with French language the subtitle filename must contain fre(ISO 639-2 Code) or fr(ISO 639-1 Code).
- The movie.fre.mp4
- The movie.fr.mp4
To tag the external subtitle file with Serbian language the subtitle filename must contain srp(ISO 639-2 Code) or sr(ISO 639-1 Code).
- The movie.srp.mp4
- The movie.sr.mp4
External subtitle can be attributed as Forced and/or Default by adding the word itself in the Subtitle filename separated by dot(.).
Example :
- Subtitle attributed with Forced : The movie.Forced.srt
- Subtitle attributed with Default : The movie.Default.srt
- Subtitle attributed with Forced and Default : The movie.Forced.Default.srt
4. Subtitles arranged in ascending order
When multiple subtitles are loaded into MPC-BE subtitle tracks list, they are arranged in ascending order.
MPC-BE gives most preference to the subtitle which is listed at top position followed by other subtitles in the list moving downward.
Manually select a subtitle track for display in MPC-BE
When multiple subtitle track has been loaded in MPC-BE, user has option to manually select a subtitle track for display in video screen area.
To select a subtitle track from the list of subtitles, do the followings:
- Select Play > Subtitles > (Select a subtitle from the list of subtitles).
Method 2
To select a subtitle track from the list of subtitles, do the followings:
- Select SUB button in the Controls bar.
- Select a subtitle from the list of subtitles.
Automatic Loading of Audio tracks by MPC-BE
When a media file is played MPC-BE searches of audio tracks embedded in it. If the audio tracks are found then it is loaded into MPC-BE audio track list.
MPC-BE app also searches for external audio tracks in the folders specified in the list labelled Auto-load audio files located in Audio > Audio open settings. If the audio tracks are found then it is loaded into MPC-BE audio track list. The filename of external audio track must match the filename of the video file.
Manual Loading of Audio tracks by MPC-BE
User have option to manually load a audio track into MPC-BE for playback.
To load a External Audio track in MPC-BE, do the followings :
- Select Play > Audio > Load Ext Audio. (Keyboard shortcut : Ctrl+L)
- Select the external audio file using Windows OS file Explorer.
- Select Open button.
- The external audio track which has been manually loaded into MPC-BE audio track list will be selected for playback.

When multiple audio tracks has been loaded, MPC-BE need to select one of them for playback.

- Audio tracks in the list of loaded audio tracks are arranged in ascending order. MPC-BE will give preference to the audio track which is listed at top followed by other audio tracks moving downward in the list.
1. Prefer external audio files over embedded audio track
The Setting is located at Audio > Audio Open Setting.
Prefer external audio files over embedded audio track :
- Checked : MPC-BE will prefer selection of external audio tracks over the embedded audio tracks.
- Unchecked : MPC-BE will prefer selection of external audio tracks over the embedded audio tracks.
2. Audio Default Track Preference Settings
Audio track selection setting is useful when there are multiple audio tracks for the media file. This feature will work only if the audio track has proper Language attribute which is used to detect the language of the track.Audio: The MPC-BE inbuilt Default track preference setting allows the user to set a list of preferred languages which will be preferred by MPC-BE for the selection of a audio track in specified language from the list of multiple audio tracks which has been loaded in MPC-BE .The language which has been entered first in the list will be given highest preference followed by other languages in the list.
For MPC-BE track selection based on language will work only if the audio track has proper Language attribute.

Example : If jap spa rus has been entered then MPC-BE will give highest preference to the audio track in Japanese language, followed by Spanish and Russian language.
External audio file must be properly attributed/tagged with Language by adding the Language code in its filename separated by dot(.). This is required for default track preference setting work properly.
It is recommended to use following language code for external audio file :
- ISO 639-2 Code
- ISO 639-1 Code
Example :
To tag the external audio file with English language its filename must contain eng(ISO 639-2 Code) or en(ISO 639-1 Code).

3. Audio track Attribute
Audio track which has been attributed/tagged as Forced and/or Default will be given preference in selection of audio track for playback.
4. Audio Tracks list
Audio tracks loaded in MPC-BE player are listed in audio track list. Audio tracks are according to the Filename arranged in ascending order.
Audio tracks list is located in Play > Audio menu between separation bars.
Manual selection of Audio tracks by MPC-BE
User have option to manually select a audio track from the list of audio tracks loaded in MPC-BE.
Method 1
To manually select a audio track, do the followings:
- Select Play > Audio > (Select a audio track.)
Method 2
Audio tracks can also be selected from the Controls bar.
To manually select a audio track, do the followings:
- Select AUD button in the Controls bar.
- Select an audio track.
Syncing Audio track in MPC-BE
The MPC-BE inbuilt audio time shift feature is useful when the audio track is out of sync with the video track.
In MPC-BE user can time shift the audio track playback.
The audio time shift is done in millisecond (ms) unit.
1 second = 1000 millisecond
To play audio track delayed(late), user need to enter a positive value for Audio time shift.
To play audio track early(in advance), user need to enter a negative value for Audio time shift.
To enable the Audio time shift feature, do the followings:
- Select Audio > Sound processing tab.
- Check the checkbox labelled Audio time shift (ms) and enter the amount of time in the textbox.
- Select Apply button.
Example :
To play the audio track 1 second delayed, set Audio time shift (ms) to 1000.
To play the audio track 4.5 second delayed, set Audio time shift (ms) to 4500.
To play the audio track 2.3 second in advance, set Audio time shift (ms) to -2300.
To play the audio track 5.25 second delayed, set Audio time shift (ms) to -5250.
To disable the Audio time shift feature, do the followings:
- Select Audio > Sound processing tab.
- Uncheck the checkbox labelled Audio time shift (ms.
- Select Apply button.
Syncing Subtitle track in MPC-BE
The MPC-BE inbuilt subtitle time shift feature is useful when the subtitle track is out of sync with the video & audio track during playback.
In MPC-BE Subtitle time shifting works using keyboard shortcuts and the Delay interval settings done in Subtitles > Rendering > Delay interval.
Delay interval setting is done in milliseconds (ms) unit. The time set in delay interval decide how much
1 second = 1000 millisecond
To play the subtitle track delayed(late) by time specified in Delay interval, user need to use keyboard shortcut F1.
To play the subtitle track early (in advance) by time specified in Delay interval, user need to use keyboard shortcut F2.
Example :
To play the subtitle track delayed by 1 second with Delay Interval set to 500 ms, user need to press F1 key two(1000 ms / 500 ms = 2) times.
To play the subtitle track delayed by 2.5 second with Delay Interval set to 500 ms, user need to press F1 key five(2500 ms / 500 ms = 5) times.
To play the subtitle track in advance by 3.5 second with Delay Interval set to 500 ms, user need to press F2 key seven(3500 ms / 500 ms = 7) times.
To play the subtitle track in advance by 4 second with Delay Interval set to 500 ms, user need to press F3 key eight(4000 ms / 500 ms = 8) times.
Save/Convert a text based Subtitle File in MPC-BE
User have option to save a subtitle track as a separate subtitle file when text based subtitle track has been loaded in MPC-BE.
While saving a subtitle track its file format can be converted into other supported text based subtitle formats.
To save a subtitle track, do the followings:
- Play the Media File in MPC-BE.
- Select the subtitle track subtitle track which will be saved from the Menu Play > Subtitle.
- Select File > Save Subtitle . (Keyboard shortcut : Ctrl+S)
- Select a folder where the subtitle file will be saved using File Explorer.
- Enter the Filename of the subtitle file in the text box labelled File Name.
- Select the subtitle format in which the subtitle will be saved from the drop down list labelled Save as type.
- Select Save button.
Subtitle file formats supported for saving subtitle file in MPC-BE
Custom Subtitle Auto load paths
User have option to specify their own custom Subtitle Autoload paths. MPC-BE will search for external subtitle files in specified paths (folders,directory). Auto-load feature will auto load only those external subtitle track whose filename matches the filename of the Media File being played.
It is located at Subtitles > Autoload paths in MPC-BE Options window.
Subtitle paths entered in the Autoload paths must be separated by semicolon (;)
dot (.) represents the path in which currently playing media file exist.
By default three sub folders of the path in which currently playing media file is located has been set. Their path names are .\subtitles, .\subs and .\sub.
User can add custom path in Autoload paths.
Example :
To add path C:\Downloads in the Autoload paths, append ;C:\Downloads
To add path named E:\Subtitles in the Autoload paths, append ;E:\Subtitles
To add sub path named Subtitle Files in the Autoload paths, append ;.\Subtitle Files
Custom Audio Auto load paths
In MPC-BE user have option to specify custom audio autoload paths. Whenever a media file is played MPC-BE searched for external audio tracks in the paths (folders,directories) specified in Auto-load Audio Files. For Auto-load feature to work properly the filename of external audio track must match the filename of Media File being played.
The auto load setting is located at Audio > Audio open settings.
Audio track paths must be separated by semicolon (;)
dot (.) represents the path in which currently playing media file exist.
By default two sub folders of the path where currently playing media file is located has been setup in MPC-BE. Their path names are .\audio and .\fandub.
User can add custom paths in Auto-load Audio files settings from where MPC-BE will load external audio tracks.
Examples
To add path C:\Audio in the Auto-load audio paths, append ;C:\Audio in it.
To add sub path .\Audio Files in the Auto-load audio paths, append ;.\Audio Files in it.
