How to Auto Search and Download Subtitles in Potplayer

Potplayer app has a feature to automatically search & download subtitles for a video file. This guide will show you how to do setup in Potplayer to auto search and download subtitles for a video file.

Settings for Auto Search and Download of subtitles for a video file

1. Setup subtitle Searching settings

  • Run Potplayer.
  • Select Subtitles > Subtitle Searching > Online Subtitle Search Settings...




  • Set Auto Search to Always. With this setting Potplayer will search subtitles for each video file being played.


  • Set After searching to Add only subs in preferred langs.


With above settings, Potplayer will automatically download subtitles for the video file being played which matches the languages specified in Preferred Languages list and add the subtitles in Potplayer.

It not necessary that Potplayer will be able to find subtitles for every video file being played.

The speed of auto search and loading of subtitles depend on the speed of the internet connection and the speed at which subtitle provider responses to Potplayer query.



2. Set Preferred Languages

 
The next step is set the languages in which subtitles will be downloaded.
  • Open Preferences window.
  • Select Subtitles > Language/Sync/Other.
  • Enter the language in which you want the subtitle to be downloaded in text box labelled Preferred languages.

 

You need to enter the 3 letter language codes (ISO 639-2) separated by comma or space.

3 letter language codes for some languages:

  • English : eng
  • Arabic : ara
  • Chinese : chi
  • Finnish : fin
  • French : fre
  • Hindi : hin 
  • Korean : kor


 

If you enter a single language in the Preferred languages list Potplayer will search and download subtitles in only that language. 

 Example : If eng is entered, Potplayer will download all the subtitles found in English language.

 

When multiple languages are entered Potplayer will try search and download subtitles found in specified languages. If subtitles in some languages are not found then it won't get downloaded.

Example : If eng fre fin has been set, Potplayer will download all the subtitles found in English,French and Finnish language.

If ger fre kor has been set. Potplayer will try to search & download all the subtitles found in German, French and Korean language. If subtitles in French and Korean language is found but subtitle in German language is not found, then only subtitles in French and Korean language will be downloaded.



3. Automatic Selection of  a subtitle track

When multiple subtitle tracks has been loaded, the next task for Potplayer is to select a subtitle to be shown along with the video file. Potplayer will automatically select a subtitle file according to the setting done by the user.

The languages specified in the Preferred languages list is also used for selection of a subtitle track for display.

Potplayer will give preference to the subtitle in the order in which it has been specified in the Preferred languages list.

 

 Example : If ger fre kor eng has been set, Potplayer will give preference to subtitles in the order :

  • German subtitle >  French subtitle > Korean subtitle > English subtitle

 

 


Subtitle priority settings 

Subtitles priority settings affects the automatic selection of subtitles. 

Subtitle priority options are :

  • Default : Potplayer will show subtitles based on the settings done by the user.
  • Prefer external subtitle : Potplayer will prefer showing external subtitles over the embedded subtitles.
  • Prefer embedded subtitles : Potplayer will prefer showing embedded subtitles over the external subtitles.
  • Allow external subtitles only :  Potplayer will only load external subtitle for the video file being played






Manually select a subtitle track

Sometime the subtitle that has been selected by Potplayer for display does not matches the audio. In such case you can manually select other subtitle for display.

To select other subtitle track :

  • Select Subtitles > Add/Select Subtitles.
  • Select a subtitle track.




Settings for Auto Search and show the Subtitle Downloader dialog box

Potplayer app can be setup to automatically search subtitles for a media file when it is played in Potplayer app. After searching for subtitle track Potplayer app will show a dialog box where user can select the subtitle track which will be downloaded and then loaded in Potplayer app for playback.
 
 

Setup subtitle Searching settings

To setup Potplayer app to auto search subtitles  and show the subtitle downloader dialog, do the following:
 
  • Run Potplayer app.
  • Select Subtitles > Subtitle Searching > Online Subtitle Search Settings...
  • Set Auto Search to Always
  • Check the check box labelled Show the dialog when subtitles are found with auto search.



 

With this setting Potplayer will search subtitles for each video file being played and show a Subtitle Downloader dialog box. When Subtitle downloader dialog box is shown user have option to


1. Download and load a single subtitle file


  • Select a suitable subtitle which you want to download.
  • Click on the Load selected subtitle.



2. Download multiple subtitles

 If you want to download and load multiple subtitle in Potplayer then do the followings:

  • Check next to multiple subtitles you want to download.
  • Select Add checked ones button.


  •  Select Stream menu as shown below.


  • Select a suitable subtitle from the list of subtitles to be shown along with the video file.





Other Subtitle Searching settings


Auto search :

  • Never : Potplayer will never search for subtitle online.
  • When subs don't exist :Potplayer will search for subtitle online, only if there is no subtitle loaded for the video file being played.



 
 
After searching :
  • Load the first found subs : Potplayer will load the first subtitle found on online subtitle provider. Problem with choosing this option is that the first subtitle that has been found may not be in desired language.
  • Add all found subtitles : Potplayer will load all the subtitle(s) found on online subtitle provider. Problem with choosing this option is too many subtitles will be loaded in potplayer and it could be difficult to select a subtitle .
  • Add only subs in preferred langs :  Potplayer will load only the subtitles specified in the Preferred languages list.
