Guide for installation and configuration of K-Lite Codec Pack Standard to be used by Microsoft Windows Media Player.
The inbuilt Windows Media Player (WMP) in Microsoft Window 10 won't be able to play some audio and video formats because codecs to play those media files is not present in Windows 10.
So user need to install additional media codecs.
Installing K-Lite codec pack will solve many playback issues in WMP
- Not showing video while playing some video formats
- WMP freezes during video and audio playback
- Cannot play a some media file format.
- OS : Microsoft Windows 10 Pro v2004 x64
- Software : Windows Media Player x64
- K-Lite Codec Pack Standard 15.9.5
1. First download the K-Lite Codec Pack Standard
- Download link : K-Lite Codec Pack Standard
2. Install the K-Lite Codec Pack Standard
- Execute the setup file.
- Select Installation Mode as Normal.
- Set Windows Media Player as Preferred video player.
- Set Windows Media Player as Preferred audio player.
- Uncheck Install MPC-HC as a secondary player.
Preferred languages for audio and subtitles
Here user can set upto three languages which will be used for selection of the audio tracks in specified language.
- Set Preferred language
- Audio decoder output : Select the correct speaker configuration.
- Select button Windows Sound Settings to configure speaker configuration.
Windows Sound Configuration
- Select the Configure button
- Complete the Speaker configuration.
3. Configure K-Lite Codec Pack
- Search and open Codec Tweak Tool from Windows Start menu.
Preferred Splitter settings
- Select Preferred splitters in Codec tweak Tool.
- Select LAV Splitter for all types of media files.
- Select Apply & Close.
Preferred Decoder settings
- Select Preferred decoders in Codec tweak Tool.
- Select LAV Video if its available.
- Scroll down.
- Select LAV Audio option wherever it is shown.
- Select Apply & Close.
Disable Microsoft codecs
- Select MS Codec Tweaks in Codec tweak Tool.
- Select all the Decoders as shown in the image below.
- Select Apply & Close.
4. Set 64 bit version of Windows Media Player as Default Media Player
If you want to use 64-bit version of Windows media player instead of 32-bit version of Windows Media Player, do the followings:
- Select Various Tweaks in Codec tweak Tool.
- Check Use 64-bit WMP instead of default 32-bit version.
- Select Apply & Close.
5. Set Windows Media Player as Default video player
- Open Settings window.
- Select Apps > Default apps.
- Set Windows Media Player as default video player.
- Set Windows Media Player as default audio player.
